Malach Virex
Sombre, exacting, and unmoved. Virex is a professional in the way his faith demands: above vengeance and hatred, beyond the petty concerns of the living, devoted to the proper order of death and the keeping of its records. He is not warm and he is not cruel; he is just, in the cold Cthosian sense, and he holds the impure and the heretical in quiet contempt. He says far less than he knows, always, and he has made an art of the silence.

Overview
Archdeacon Malach Virex keeps the dead of Mandrake Bay. To the people of Seahaven he is the sombre, unsettling old cleric of the Sepulchral Lantern, the city’s most ancient temple, who records the names of the drowned and sets their lanterns adrift each winter; that is all most of them will ever know of him. In truth he is one of the quiet powers of the Church of Cthos. He watches, he records, and he waits... for when a decision is reached, it is final.
Description
A gaunt, gray man of sixty-six, tall and stooped, wrapped in the black, white, and gray robes of his Church, the yew-carved symbol of his Order worn where few could name it. His face is a careful blank and his eyes are cold and patient and very old. He moves slowly, for his body is failing him, but no one who has met that gaze mistakes the frailty for weakness. He carries a reaper’s scythe, the symbol of Cthos the Doomsayer, and he carries it as a man who knows how to use it.
Background
Virex came up through the ascending Orders of Cthos the Doomsayer, the silent Lord of the Underworld who judges the dead from the Palace of Nugarath. For decades he has tended the Sepulchral Lantern, a temple older than Mandrake’s church-in-exile, older than Neptaran rule, founded when Marosh was a different shape; and in its catacomb-archives he has read things that would unmake a lesser faith.
