     2089 NC -
     20 years old
Valessia Gabinius Caestrix, Captain of the Regnum Obscura, Warcaptain of the Black Laurels.  Human Female.

Overview

Charming, erudite, and imperious, Valessia is a master manipulator who can match blades or wits with any captain on the sea. She presents herself as a noblewoman first and pirate second, and speaks in the formalized rhetoric of the Old Empire, yet she shows no mercy to enemies or traitors. She is utterly loyal to her fleet, but sees all alliances lasting only as long as their utility.

Description

Valessia wears her Imperial identity like a shroud: deep crimson naval robes fringed in sea-black, a golden laurel circlet tarnished by salt, and rings upon every finger, each from a fallen rival. Her face is striking, with pale blue eyes that burn with ambition and cruelty. Her voice cuts like a polished blade. She wears a dagger at her belt in the shape of a stylized thorned hook — a memento of some unspoken tragedy from her past.

Background

The Gabinii were once a proud family of the senatorial class who even had members stand as Emperors of the Great Empire. It is rumored that her family's lands were seized and her father executed and Valessia either fled to the Pirate Isles or was attempting to evade capture at sea when pirates took her. Once a part of Tamerish society, however, she became valuable by trading naval secrets to the Warcaptains. She was able to barter her services into command of her own vessel by the age of eighteen and soon began building her own fleet. She became a Warcaptain at the age of nineteen, the youngest currently serving and, perhaps, the youngest Warcaptain ever recognized as such. Whispers suggest she is still loyal to a secret Imperial remnant, but none have lived long enough to confirm it.
